Lawn Care and Maintenance
Ok, so…your relaxing outside in a chair after coming home from a local little league baseball game where your 9 year old son just cranked one out. You’re enjoying a nicely cracked Coors Light beer…oh the froth!!! The wind is gently blowing from the ocean and you think “oh I am so great, I love my landscaping, my house and my family”. Just then, the lightbulb goes off above your head, thinking….hmmm, did I forget something???
Yes, you did, Mr. “I’m drinking beer and forgetting about my lawn and it’s care and maintenance”. You get up, put the beer down and head into your shed to consider, what and how I need to do my lawn care and maintenance. Some things you may consider are:
- Mowing/Edging your lawn
- Spreading topper/compost on the lawn
- Fertilizing the lawn after mowing
- Weeding
No matter the time of year, a well kept lawn deserves nice lawn care and maintenance. Nothing shows how manly a man could be other than keeping track of that beautiful lawn!!
SPRINGTIME: Lawn care and maintenance in the spring can vary depending on where you reside; however, there are some things that remain the same whether you live in a warm or cool.
The list below displays things that every lawn should get…TLC!! By doing these correctly, it will save you time in the long run and you will have one of the best, well kept lawns on the street! See our SpringTime Tips here
- Mowing with a sharp blade
- Low Mowing
- De-thatching (if you have Bermuda)
- Removing Weeds
- Aerating (see our Complete Guide to Aerating here)
- Light Feeding (fertilizing)
SUMMER: Let’s get with the mowing parties, not THROWING parties, but MOWING Parties! Mow Mow Mow, is what you usually do in the summer! We get our that mower, make sure it’s running right, and get busy! With summer’s heat comes everyone’s favorite lawn care and maintenance job-regular lawn mowing! See our Summer Tips Here. With lawn mowing comes the question…what type of mower should I be using? See our Lawn Mower F.A.Q.
- Rotary mower?
- Riding mower?
- Reel-type mower?
- Walk behind mower?
- Gas powered mower?
- Electric powered mower?
- Battery powered mower?
- Manual powered mower?
FALL: In the Fall, the way we do our lawn care is a little different. One thing that I always do is overseed my lawn with winter rye grass (perennial rye) around September/October time. I live in southern California and I have tiffgreen Bermuda grass. Bermuda starts to go dormant in the fall time. First thing I do is de-thatch the lawn completely, almost down to the dirt. De-thatching will make sure that the Bermuda lawn will indeed go dormant. See our Fall Tips Here. In other parts of the US, weekly mowing may not be a part of your routine, there are other responsibilities to implement. The area that you live in pretty much dictates some of the specifics. See our regional map here.
Basic Fall Ideas are:
- Making your lawn mower mow the grass at a lower level
- This will remove some dead areas (excessive growth)
- Applying topper/compost
- Natural Organic Fertilizer
Winter: Check these winter basics for lawn care and maintenance:
- See our Winter Tips Here
- Take extra precaution on winter laden lawns, don’t put anyting on it that you wouldn’t put on it in the summer (IE: Boats, cars, campers, RVs)
- Warmer regions as California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida should keep watering to make sure that your lawn still gets her drink!
In conclusion, doing your year round lawn care and maintenance, will only ensure that you will have a great lawn year round! By conducting certain maintenance ideas in other season, will bring you a beautiful lawn in corresponding seasons. There is nothing like a beautiful lawn in front of your kingdom!
